BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)2. In Imperial units, BMI = 703 × weight(lb) / height(in)2.
It’s a population-level screen. It doesn’t account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. Pair it with waist-to-height ratio, body fat %, and clinical guidance.
BMI uses height & weight only. Body fat % estimates adipose tissue directly (via calipers, BIA, DEXA). Someone muscular can have a high BMI but a healthy body fat %.
For under-20s, clinicians use age- and sex-specific BMI percentiles. This tool is for adults.
